Getting away from the city is always a good idea. It’s an even better idea when you have someone special to share it with. This weekend getaway is one of my favourite’s and holds a special place in my heart. Portsmouth is the second largest city in the county of Hampshire on the south coast of England. its also notable for being the United Kingdom’s only island city.
So whats so great about Portsmouth? Sea air, fantastic walks, village and destination shopping, and amazing restaurants overlooking the seafront. You don’t have to get all dressed up every night either. In fact some of the best places in Portsmouth are very ‘normal’ indeed. Here’s PlacetoDates top ideas for Portsmouth.
The Spinnaker Tower is Portsmouths answer to the London Eye and in my opinion way more fun. Towering high at 170m you are taken up in a fast lift. Your ears will pop! There are several viewing decks allowing you to look out over the sea. There’s even a glass floor to play on when you feel daring. Just to scare other people I’d suggest you jump up and down on it (I always do).
Recently they have converted one of the viewing decks into a cafe. It’s a great place to sit and relax.
Just at the base of the tower you’ll find the amazing shopping centre that is Gunwharf Quays. Its a fantastic place to have a little wonder around and buy each other a little gift. It’s also a vibrant and buzzing hive of activity at night.
Just at the base of the tower (and around the corner) you’ll find Customs House which is basically a good pub. On one trip to Portsmouth I had lunch there every single day!
With amazing seats, great staff and a fantastic atmosphere it’s easy to get yourself lost in here for hours. The rooms are all divided up into little private areas adding to the experience.
When you follow the trail from Gunwharf to ‘Old Portsmouth’ you really should check out the Spice Island for a drink or two. Sitting across from Spinnaker you’ll be able to watch ships go by whilst relaxing together. With a fantastic outside seating area (which you will be able to see when at the top of Spinnaker) and nice drinks menu this is a must visit.
This really is a golden nugget and I think I’m going to be sorry I’m sharing this one with the world. Welcome to a ‘Fish and Chip’ pub.
Located directly opposite the Spice Island you’ll find the Still and West which serves Fish, sausage and chips in newspaper direct to your table! Whats more is they actually have a ‘fish and chip’ style counter. A fantastic budget evening with a great view once again.
This video is aimed at the family visit to Portsmouth, but you can see some of the things I’ve talked about.
